Understanding Colour in Your Life

My dear sister Paula is an expert in colour. She is trained in colour therapy and aura soma, as well as having a degree in fine art and education.   We co-wrote the course "Creating Your Life in Balance."  She has written this page and writes a very interesting and insightful article on colour in our free monthly ezine.  Each month we will

Here, the three primary colours of red, yellow and blue are seen as an upward triangle or sword and are the masculine colours. They are called primaries as they cannot be made - they have to originate from pigment. These primaries, when mixed in combination, make the secondaries, the downward triangle or cup and are considered feminine colours. The masculine colours balance and complement the feminine colours.

Red and Yellow make Orange
Blue and Yellow make Green
Red and Blue make Violet.

What has colour got to do with your life?
Everything!
by Paula Bradley, Australia

Did you know that our bodies are made up of colourful light and sound vibrations?  We have all the colours of the rainbow within us on a vibrational level which is why we resonate with or dislike certain colours.  It is no coincidence that red is used for the red light district as it resides in our base chakra/sex organs and how in red we manifest money; or that green makes us feel open and harmonious and that violet is the colour used by royalty and the high churches for ceremonies.

This chart will give you some clues as to how colour is affecting you and also how you are resonating with life. (Click on the image to enlarge.)

If we could see ourselves in balance, our colours would look like the coloured man above. We have energy centers in us, relating to each colour, called chakras, which in Hindi means wheel.  Each wheel looks a bit like the cheese token in the Trivial Pursuit game, with all seven colours in it.  The speed that the chakra spins dictates the colour it emits.

When we are out of balance, say for example when we are tired, then our base chakra is spinning too slowly and is not emitting red.  Using a red colour and then a green one, the complement, helps bring it back to its rightful speed.  For example, we could play red music, like African or salsa music, and then sit in nature for some green.

The colour chart and explanation below will help you understand how colours work with their complement to help you come back into balance.

The complement to any colour is the one sitting opposite on the star.

If you look at the colour wheel again you can see that when we work with the complement we are working with all three primaries, which is in effect the whole colour spectrum. For example, if you are working with the compliments of red and green, green is made up of yellow and blue, therefore you are working with red, yellow and blue. So, working with a primary colour and its complement can help bring the whole body into balance.

Quite often we will spin in and out of balance in the colour that is our strength colour, as that is the colour we mostly operate from.  We will also find that we are weak or strong in the complementary pairs of colours.

You

If you find that you have two colours that you had all ticks for in the 'in and out of balance' and they are next to each other, then most likely it the tertiary colour in between that is out.  For instance, if you found you were weak in blue and violet, then you would be weak in indigo.  Check out this colour wheel to see the in between tertiary colours.
