Giclee Prints

"Giclee" (pronounced jhee-clay) is a French word meaning to spray or squirt.

Giclee prints are made with high resolution captures of original fine art work. The digital images are then printed with professional 4- 12 color archival pigment ink printers. The prints can be made on various surfaces matching the original medium such as canvas, watercolor paper and photobase paper. Giclees provide better accuracy than any other means of reproduction, producing stunning color, definition and saturation.

From the standpoint of the art collecting public, a Giclee Print is a recognized and collectable category of fine art found in museums, fine art and photographic galleries.

I work with an excellent printer who produces extremely high quality work with great care, expertise and state of the art technology. They take the time and consideration to work with the print until a proof has been made that we both agree is faithful to the original. The work is then reproduced with pigment–based inks which have more archival properties than the commonly used water based inks. It is printed onto the reputable German Hahnemuhle fine art watercolor paper or onto canvas which is then coated with a protective UV varnish. We finally check each print again before I hand sign and number the print. The number shows the unique number of that edition and the edition size, eg. 50/250. Each print is one of a limited edition and comes with a Certificate of Authenticity.

Care of a Giclee

It is recommended that you treat your Giclee the same as any original watercolor. The thing to remember is that all color fades. As far as Giclee Prints are concerned, some original water colors fade faster than a well made Giclee. Your Giclee Print should be protected from water and should not be placed in direct sunlight. While the display life depends on many variables, under typical home or office lighting, Giclees made with pigment based inks are expected to last over 100 years without noticeable fade.

Giclees printed on paper should be mounted and framed behind glass. Canvas is not usually framed behind glass so we varnish the printed canvas with a UV protective Varnish as part of our service.
