Oil painting for beginners

Capturing light in Udaipur.

Duration: 4 week course, Sept 25 - Oct 16th , Saturdays 9.30am - 12.30pm | Scheduled Dates

This painting is from a photo I took early one morning on Lake Pichola in Udaipur, Rajasthan. I can still hear all the temple sounds as I write this. There is much to learn in this painting.

This is all about learning how to see and mix colour and the painting skills to express yourself in your own way.

Week 1 -3 will be in the studio working form a photo so you can really get an idea of how to mix the palette and express it in your own way. Week 4 will be plein air, weather allowing.

Learn how to mix colour, blend and layer oils to create reflections of light in landscape.

The palette has subtle nuances and easy to learn.

Learn how to paint architecture.

Learn how to pull an image forward or to recede it into background.

How to take a photo and pull out the elements that you want.

How to make light the main subject matter.

How to blend colour.

How to glaze.

If you are new to oils or colour mixing, there will be an introductory evening on Thursday Sept 23rd 6.30 -.8.30pm. Write to me to book.

Oils handle very differently to acrylics. They have a wonderful buttery quality and have a much longer drying time which leads to greater abilities to blend and a longer time to scrape back when you want to create change.

Mostly it is learning how to see colour, see tone and hot or cool colours. This takes time to gradually develop that skill of seeing it.

Oil painting can be pretty expensive to set up so I am supplying all the art materials.

Oil paints, painting medium, boards, brushes, canvas, gesso and painting medium are supplied. If you have your own paints there is a $20 discount. You’ll need pthalo blue, ultramarine blue, cadmium red, quinacridone magenta, Yellow Ochre, cad yellow, white, burnt umber.

I have the painting medium and boards.

Morning tea is provided.

$300 early bird (includes GST) by August 1st. Otherwise $340. $25 discount if you bring your own oil paints.

Pay $100 deposit to book your place and pay the balance on week 1 or by arrangement.
